When it comes to the best welding wire, do you know what type of wire you need for the job? What type of welding will you be doing? Do you know the difference between MIG and TIG welding methods and wire?

Read on for your guide on everything to do with MIG and TIG welding.

What is the difference between MIG and TIG welding?

The main difference between MIG (metal inert gas) and TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding is that MIG welding uses a continuously feeding wire, whilst TIG uses welding rods which are slowly fed into the welding puddle as welding takes place.

In comparison, MIG is really easy to use and get the hang of, whereas TIG welding is quite tricky and takes a lot more training.

How do the different weld methods work?

An MIG welder uses a spool of welding wire that is continuously fed to him. It will burn, melt and fuse the parent and base metals together. MIG welding works on a range of materials, including stainless steel, mild steel and aluminium. MIG is a fast way of welding, putting down welds quickly.

TIG welding works by using welding rods and is commonly used for materials of a thinner gauge. It is much more fine work, used on small objects like toolboxes and sinks. It’s also very delicate and therefore takes a much steadier hand and more experience with welding.

Whilst TIG welding is useful for a wide range of welding projects, it does take more skill and is very slow work. If you want to jump right into welding at home, rather go with the MIG technique.

These two types of welding techniques make use of different welding wires.

MIG wire is sold in large rolls to accommodate the continued feeding of the wire, whilst TIG wire is sold in sticks or rods.

You can find both of these types of wires at The Stainless Steel Wire Shop. We manufacture and supply only the best welding wire on the market, and are also manufacturers and distributors of a wide range of other stainless steel wire products.
